On this day in 1918, the composer Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry died. Parry is best known today for his sacred music, and in particular the rousing tune to William Blake’s text for Jerusalem, and the anthem I Was Glad, used in many a royal service.
On this occasion I wanted to draw attention to his Fifth Symphony, a fine composition that was revived at the BBC Proms in the composer’s centenary year under Martyn Brabbins.
