New music – Sarah Neufeld, Richard Reed Parry, Rebecca Foon: Georgia (Myagi remix) (One Little Independent)

published by Ben Hogwood, with text from the press release

Canadian electronic producer Myagi unveils his new remix of Georgia, originally composed by Sarah Neufeld, Richard Reed Parry and Rebecca Foon, taken from their collaborative debut album First Sounds.

Reimagining the original composition through his signature acidic style, Myagi transforms the piece into a steadily evolving, rhythm-driven journey. The remix shifts the work from its chamber-influenced, meditative origins while retaining its depth and melodic sensitivity.

“It was a joy to work with such a beautiful original piece,” says Myagi. “Rather than simply add a beat I chose to reinterpret it, building a solid evolving, funky groove that builds and builds into a milieu of dreamy euphoria. I hope this finds its way into both a late night dance floor and a sunny summer afternoon playlist.”

Richard Reed Parry reflects on the reinterpretation; “Myagi and I have known each other since early childhood, though this is the first time our musical paths have ever officially crossed. We couldn’t be more thrilled about the remix he has done for us – it’s entirely outside of what we do musically as a trio, but hearing our own acoustic instruments and gentle sound space transformed into this hypnotic, rolling electronic groove sounds somehow entirely natural, and very exciting to us. Enjoy.”

First Sounds is the debut album from Neufeld, Parry, and Foon, a trio whose roots trace back to Montreal in the late 1990s, where they first met and began collaborating before embarking on internationally recognised careers.

Neufeld and Parry are widely known for their work with indie rock group Arcade Fire and instrumental ensemble Bell Orchestre, while Rebecca Foon has been a central figure in Montreal’s experimental and contemporary classical scene, co-founding Esmerine, performing with Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra and Set Fire To Flames, and leading her electro-acoustic project Saltland.

Myagi has been producing since 1997, touring internationally across Australia, China, and Europe. His work has been featured across HBO, Showtime, BBC, MTV, CBC, Syfy, and Netflix, and he has remixed artists including Orbital, The Crystal Method, and Dub Pistols, as well as appearing on BBC Radio 1, Triple J, Sirius, and other international broadcasters.

New music – Mary Lattimore reworks ‘Rosa Canina’ by Sarah Neufeld, Richard Reed Parry & Rebecca Foon (One Little Independent and Envision Records)

adapted from the press release by Ben Hogwood

Harpist and composer Mary Lattimore is unveiling her rework of Rosa Canina, taken from First Sounds, the debut collaborative album by Sarah Neufeld, Richard Reed Parry, and Rebecca Foon.

Lattimore, known for her transcendent and evocative solo works, brings her signature sense of intimacy and cosmic spaciousness to the piece. Her reimagining deepens the original’s meditative string motifs, layering them with shimmering harp. Her rework finds her in dialogue with kindred spirits, artists who also inhabit the borderlands between classical form, ambient meditation, and intuitive sound.

On Record – Sarah Neufeld: Detritus (One Little Independent)

reviewed by Ben Hogwood

What’s the story?

Violinist Sarah Neufeld adds to her solo canon with Detritus, her third album. It is a substantial piece of work dating back to 2015, when Neufeld met and collaborated with choreographer Peggy Baker. The two struck up an intense understanding, but the short time working together was ultimately unfulfilling. This led to a reunion in 2019, where Arcade Fire member and Bell Orchestre co-founder Neufeld effectively faced off in improvisation with Baker, and the seeds of Detritus were sown.

What’s the music like?

As striking as the cover art. This is a powerfully affecting piece of work in which the violin is only a part of the story. Although it is a lead character, Neufeld has plenty going on around the loops and cells of the stringed instrument, with wide open effects and textures and a substantial body of percussion, inspired and executed by Arcade Fire bandmate Jeremy Gara. Bell Orchestre‘s Pietro Amato brings rich horn textures, while flautist Stuart Bogie adds deep woodwind colour.

The violin is played with the poise of a dancer, with an airborne feeling to the instrument’s commentary on Stories. With Love And Blindness has impressive depth and again a tension between the slow moving vocals and the urgency of Neufeld’s melodic cells. The Top is propulsive, flickering figures dancing up and down. Tumble Down The Undecided is a very impressive piece of work, the violin dancing across the strings as long, noble notes go across the music like tracers, all to the accompaniment of rolling percussion and the swell of cymbals. Shed Your Dear Heart is also a substantial structure, with the violin looping constantly while rolling drums march forward, more than a little ominously.

Does it all work?

Yes – and the more you listen, especially on headphones, the more you appreciate the expert layering of parts and intersection of the musical motifs.

Is it recommended?

Yes, enthusiastically. It is great to have Miller and Jones committing their friendship to record in this way, and the musical chemistry between them is clear. Hopefully this will lead to further installments!
